Hailing from out of south London, Steve White (aka Steve Spacek) is the celebrated voice behind the ground-breaking genre-pushing group Spacek. In the mid 90’s he teamed up with drummer Morgan Zarate and guitarist Edmond Cavill to form Spacek which quickly became considered one of the most forward thinking and innovative Electronic soul/RnB bands of the last decade. The bands work has been championed by everyone from Entertainment Weekly to Mos Def and with their first release “Eve” considered a modern day classic, the group set off a worldwide buzz on their futuristic sound and Steve as a singer.
After making two stunning albums with his group Spacek, Steve set up in Los Angeles to record his first solo album “Space Shift”. The album hosted some high profile guests including the late Jay Dee (J-Dilla) on “Dollar” and also Motown figure Leon Ware who made a guest appearance in the brilliant duet “Smoke”. The albums main single “Dollar” became an instant hit and was described by Digable Planets member, King Britt, as "what Curtis Mayfield would be doing today!" On Space Shift, Steve used his beat making skills to a degree not exposed before, producing much of the music. His production is restrained and elegant, a galaxy of spaced out, funky soundscapes and mellow atmospheres which retains the dreamy aesthetic of the Spacek albums. Inspired throughout his career by Curtis Mayfield and Marvin Gaye, Steve’s vocal style carries a silky emotion and smooth aesthetic which is never bold or overstated.
Steve and his band Spacek have received critical acclaim by the likes of Rolling Stone magazine noting that Spacek “...gives new meaning to the phrase space funk”, and Fader magazine calling the group "the most futuristic soul group of our modern age”. The Spacek stripped-bare brand of R&B, harmonious downbeats and the soft but strongly evocative floating style of Steve’s vocals have earned Spacek comparisons to everyone from Massive Attack through to D'Angelo, but essentially their sound remains beyond classification. These days Steve Spacek resides in Sydney. More recent work with Red Bull Music Academy and Mark Pritchard (Harmonic 313, Troubleman, Global Communication, Jedi Knights) has seen the birth of his latest project “Afrika Hi-Tek”. The group has forthcoming releases on well respected labels and with various shows across festivals this past summer, the Steve Spacek & Mark Pritchard, “Africa Hi- Tek” project is turning heads everywhere. |
